Initial 5 Years
For five wonderful years, Red Coral Montessori School called Watamu home. It was a place where little feet ran, curious minds explored, friendships grew and countless memories were made. Watamu became much more than the address of our school. It became an important part of our story.
Mid-Term Break Incident:
During the school’s mid-term break, a devastating fire swept through the neighbourhood where our Watamu school was located. The fire destroyed the school premises and affected the surrounding area and its environs. In a matter of hours, a place filled with learning, laughter and memories was gone.
The building was lost, but the heart of Red Coral Montessori School was not. Our commitment to our children, our teachers, our Montessori philosophy and the quality of education we provide remained firmly intact.
Post-Break Support
Following the mid-term break, we were generously hosted by Sands of Darakasi for approximately one and a half months, allowing us to continue learning and caring for our children through to the end of the term. We remain sincerely grateful for that support during an extraordinarily difficult time.
Relocation & Rebuilding
Saying goodbye to Watamu after five years was emotional. We left behind classrooms, routines, celebrations, friendships, beach days, art projects, songs, stories and the many small moments that made our school community special.
But every ending can make room for a new beginning. We made the decision to move forward and begin again in Malindi.
Reopening (Malindi Era)
Moving was not simply about finding another building. We wanted to rebuild a school that still felt like Red Coral: warm, child-centred, purposeful and full of opportunities for children to explore and learn independently.
There is something extraordinary about hearing children’s voices return to a school—the laughter, questions, stories, footsteps and endless curiosity. It reminded us that a school is not simply a building. It is the people, the purpose and the community within it.
